The walk-in shower is a shower that is accessible to all, because it is built at the same level as the bathroom floor or slightly higher. What are its advantages and disadvantages? Find out here!
The walk-in showera practical layout
The walk-in shower is built at the same level as the bathroom floor. There are no steps or ledges to step over, so it's easy and effortless to get into and there's no risk of falling, especially for children, the elderly and people with reduced mobility.
Wide and generally open, it can be fitted with a seat and handrails, making it safe to use for people with reduced independence.
The walk-in shower is suitable for all bathrooms, as there are no size restrictions. What's more, it offers a modern alternative to the classic shower, and can be customised thanks to its fully tiled surfaces.
Finally, a walk-in shower is easy to clean because it doesn't have as many corners as a conventional shower or bath, and its surfaces are flat.
... but a more complex
Whether it's a renovation or a new build, installing a walk-in shower is more complex than installing a bathtub or conventional shower? Because the base of the shower is at the same level as the floor, the latter has to be lowered to allow the siphon and drains to be installed. However, this operation is less restrictive when building a new house than when renovating, because in the latter case it's not always possible to lower the floor, so the entire bathroom has to be raised to accommodate the plumbing.
Another disadvantage is that the risk of seepage is greater with a tiled surface than with a conventional tub. The greatest care must therefore be taken.
Finally, a walk-in shower, which is more modern and more comfortable, is also more expensive to install than a shower with a basin.
Practical, suitable for everyone and modern, the walk-in shower offers many advantages for your bathroom, but beware of the more complex design and budget! It is nevertheless a real plus for the value of your home in the event of resale.
